Going for a job interview? Then it’s vital to be able to describe your work.
Many people enter job interviews without having a clear idea on what they are going to say. When asked open ended questions, they get stuck or start talking incoherently. A common interview questions is “tell me about your work” or “tell me about yourself.” When asked this question, they are unable to accurately describe their work, not just in writing but also verbally.
How does one expect to impress the job interviewer if they are unable to clearly describe the work they do?!
But don’t worry. It’s not so difficult to learn to handle open ended job interview questions. By practicing and rehearsing a few times before the interview, you can master the art of giving impressive interviews.
A few things to try to improve your interview taking skills:
- Research common interview questions for your job and industry and for the company where you are interviewing.
- Go over each question and ensure you have answers ready.
- Have a clear idea of what you want to say, in your mind. You should know what you want to say to be able to say it well.
- Picture your day-to-day work (or what you need to do to accomplish your job objective from start to finish) and think of what you need to describe.
- Write one or more paragraphs with answers to expected interview questions.
- Go over what you need to say.
- Rehearse out loud.
- Practice with a friend or in front of a mirror.
