Optimus Hits the Production Line as Starship Prepares Its Next Reusability Test: Musk Companies Push Physical AI Forward

Tesla has begun early production of its Optimus humanoid robot on a high-volume line at its Fremont, California factory, converting space previously used for electric vehicles. In its third-quarter shareholder update released 21 October 2026, the company stated that the first units off the line are “production-quality bots” and that the current manufacturing process is “suitable for a commercial product.” Elon Musk, speaking on the subsequent earnings call, described the effort as early production, noting that the ramp would be slow and “somewhat bumpy” because Optimus is a radically new product. He projected that reaching a rate of roughly 20,000 units per week could take at least a year, or a little longer, with much of a line sized for one million annual units already installed at Fremont.

The milestone arrived alongside flat revenue of about $28 billion and a 43 percent decline in GAAP net income to $787 million for the quarter ended 30 September. Higher operating expenses—driven by AI, robotics, and related projects—accounted for much of the pressure, while free cash flow remained positive. Musk and Tesla executives framed the spending as necessary for the pivot toward robotics, autonomy, and related AI systems, with Cybercab robotaxi activity also advancing in Austin.

Parallel progress is visible at SpaceX. On 25 October, Super Heavy Booster 22 completed a full-duration static fire of all 33 Raptor engines while clamped to the launch mount at Starbase’s Pad 2. SpaceX confirmed the test as preparation for Starship Flight 15, expected in November, with subsequent static-fire work on Ship 42. Independent tracking and NASA commentary indicate the flight could attempt the first tower catch of both stages—an upper-stage catch that has not yet been demonstrated. Musk had previously noted on SpaceX’s 20 October earnings webcast that Flight 15 was targeted for the following month. These tests support higher launch cadence and the broader goal of rapid reusability that underpins both satellite deployment and potential future orbital compute capacity.

Musk participated directly in the SpaceX and Tesla earnings webcasts on 20–21 October, addressing investors on results, manufacturing status, and longer-term integration points such as shared chip efforts at the Terafab project in Texas. He also joined the independent X Takeover event at Giga Texas virtually on 10 October for a discussion on AI, robotics, and next steps for the companies.

For job seekers and executives, the sequence highlights concrete demand for talent that can bridge high-volume manufacturing, robotics hardware reliability, AI training and inference systems, and aerospace operations. Skills in scaling novel production lines, ensuring long-duration robot durability and safety, integrating custom silicon, and managing power and thermal loads at data-center or launch-site scale are increasingly visible across these overlapping operations. Businesses evaluating automation or compute strategies gain clearer operating evidence that physical AI systems—humanoid robots on factory floors and reusable launch systems—are moving from demonstration into early production and flight-test regimes, even as commercial sales timelines for external Optimus customers remain later (around end-2027 in current projections) and regulatory steps for the next Starship flight are still pending.

The developments reinforce a concentrated build-out of hardware, software, and infrastructure capabilities across vehicles, robots, satellites, and launch systems. Outcomes will depend on execution of the production ramps, flight reliability, and the ability to attract and retain specialized talent in a competitive market for AI and advanced manufacturing roles.
