Here is what mattered most between July 18 and 24, 2026.
Tech Earnings Put AI Spending Under the Microscope
The week’s biggest market movers came from two heavyweight reports on July 22.
Alphabet (Google) delivered strong second-quarter results. Revenue rose 24% year-over-year to $119.8 billion, beating expectations, with Google Cloud surging 82% to $24.8 billion. Operating income also grew solidly. However, the company raised its full-year 2026 capital expenditure guidance significantly (to the $195–205 billion range). Heavy AI-related spending produced negative free cash flow in the quarter, and shares declined in after-hours trading as investors weighed near-term cash burn against long-term AI opportunities.
Tesla reported record Q2 revenue of $28.24 billion (up 26%), beating estimates, but adjusted earnings of $0.33 per share missed expectations. Operating margins came under pressure and the stock reacted negatively.
On July 24, Moody’s issued a notable warning: “unprecedented” AI infrastructure spending is beginning to threaten the credit quality of several major technology companies, including Amazon, Meta, Alphabet, Microsoft, and others. The agency highlighted rising debt, off-balance-sheet lease commitments, and the risk that free cash flow could remain constrained if AI monetization does not keep pace with investment.
Career & business takeaway: AI investment remains aggressive, which continues to create demand for specialized technical, cloud, and data roles. At the same time, cost scrutiny is rising. Professionals in tech and adjacent fields should emphasize measurable impact, efficiency, and ROI in their profiles and interviews. Companies are still hiring, but they are becoming more selective about productivity and cash discipline.
Trade Policy Escalates Again
Trade tensions intensified on two fronts.
President Trump announced that the United States would initiate a Section 301 investigation into the European Union’s fines and regulatory actions against U.S. technology companies (including recent multimillion-euro penalties against Google under the Digital Markets Act). He framed the EU’s approach as “robbing” American firms and signaled the possibility of substantial new tariffs.
Separately, the U.S. Trade Representative finalized Section 301 actions related to forced-labor import prohibitions, applying new or adjusted tariffs on goods from dozens of economies, with specific rate structures for the European Union and several other partners.
Oil prices also remained elevated amid ongoing regional tensions involving Iran, adding another layer of cost pressure for businesses and consumers.
Career & business takeaway: Global supply chains and cross-border professional opportunities remain sensitive to policy shifts. Entrepreneurs and professionals working with international clients or employers should stay alert to potential cost increases, compliance requirements, and shifting demand in affected sectors. Diversification of markets and skill sets continues to be a practical risk-management strategy.
Broader Market Tone
Major indexes experienced choppy trading as investors digested the earnings results, rising AI capital expenditure concerns, and geopolitical/oil volatility. Attention is already turning to the next wave of big-tech reports (Microsoft, Meta, Apple, Amazon) and the Federal Reserve’s upcoming decisions later this month.
