Job seekers looking for their first job face a dilemma. They have no work experience so can’t get a job. Not having a job means they can’t get experience. This is one of the problems job seekers complain about which keeps them struggling in their job search.
Employers prefer some work experience when making hiring decisions. This true even for beginners jobs.
So if you are fresh out of college or just graduated from high school and looking for your first job, what should you do to increase your chances of landing an ideal job quickly?
- Assess your qualifications. If you have done any internships, trainee programs, volunteer work, or even unrelated work (such as babysitting or newspaper delivery), include them on your resume. Every job provides skills useful for any job. In addition, they show motivation and drive, two necessary components of success.
- Note skills developed through academic projects and extra-curricular activities and include them on your resume. Examples include teamwork, problem solving, time management, etc.
- If the job you are applying for requires tech savviness, include technical skills on your resume. If special software use is needed, take a course in any necessary or preferred software. Crash courses are short courses that range from a few weeks to a few months and give the learner basic skills in the software that they can build on through practice and on the job work. Include information about any relevant courses you take that better qualify you for the job on your resume. Also, talk about them in job interviews.
- Speed up your job search by applying for trainee and assistant jobs in your field. Applying for such jobs where you won’t work fully independently but under supervision of an experienced professional will be easier to obtain for job seekers with no work experience. Since you won’t be competing with more experienced job seekers for such jobs, your resume is likely to get noticed. Such jobs are good for new job seekers because they enable you to build needed experience and confidence to progress in your career.
Use these tips to get your first job and open the path for further opportunities in your dream career.
