What to Do If Artificial Intelligence is Taking Over Your Job

Are you at risk of artificial intelligence taking over your job?

Artificial intelligence, bots, robotics, they seem to be everywhere.

Indeed, many jobs are being threatened by AI.

From delivery workers, to virtual assistants and customer service representatives, to cashiers and clerical workers, financial advisers, and more, AI is replacing human workers faster than we thought possible.

Companies are spending billions to upgrade their technology and incorporate AI and robotics in their systems.

Millions of workers’ jobs are threatened worldwide.

PwC report “An introduction to implementing AI in manufacturing” states, “…every industry will be impacted dramatically by Artificial Intelligence (AI) within the next five years.” Source: https://www.pwc.com/gx/en/industrial-manufacturing/pdf/intro-implementing-ai-manufacturing.pdf

Here is what to do if your job is threatened.

Don’t be misinformed. Learn about the technological developments in your area of work and how they can affect your job so you can be ready and prepared for the changes.

Upgrade your skills. For unskilled workers doing manual work, this is especially important. Upgrade your skills so more decision-making is involved in your work. This could include employee supervision, staff training, and even managing bots, robots, and AI assembly lines.

Choose a different career. Identify an area of work you are interested in and take a short course to learn the skill. There are many 1-2 year vocational training courses available from reputed colleges and educational institutes. Self study and online virtual courses also cost less than traditional training programs. Choose a career line that has demand and long-term potential, such as a tech program. Some examples are web design, graphic design, e-commerce, social media marketing, and online advertising.

Create a financial buffer. Save a portion of every salary so you have money for 6 months or a year’s expenses in case you suddenly lose your job.

What happens if your job is taken by AI and you find yourself out of work?

Here are some steps to take to get control over your life:

  1. Apply for unemployment benefits from your company, if available, to pay for your living expenses.
  2. Apply for benefits from the government such as welfare or Jobseeker’s Allowance.
  3. Reduce your expenses.
  4. Use the time you have to learn a skill that can help you get a job and back on your feet, instead of searching for work right away or doing low pay jobs that won’t sustain you long term. This way you can ensure a long term career instead of short term work that is insecure.
  5. Volunteer your time in community organizations to help others. This will improve your people skills, take your mind offer your negative situation, help you network with people who might be able to help you get a job, and give you something positive to speak about on job interviews.

To summarize, there is no denying that AI is bringing drastic changes to the world and people’s lives. The important thing is to be aware of what’s happening and go with the flow, implementing the necessary changes so you aren’t negatively affected.
